An anal douche rinses the lower rectum with water before anal play. It is a comfort and confidence measure, not a medical procedure, and most people who use one need far less water and far less frequency than they expect.
Two designs, and the difference matters
- Bulb douches. A squeezable reservoir with a nozzle. You fill it, insert, squeeze, release. Everything you need is in your hand, nothing to connect, and you control the volume exactly. This is what most people should start with.
- Shower attachments. These connect to a shower hose and draw from the mains. Continuous flow, no refilling — but the pressure and temperature come from your plumbing rather than from you, so they need more care and are better suited to people who already know what they are doing.
The Bathmate Hydro Rocket is the shower-connected option here. Everything else on this page is a bulb.
Capacity — start smaller than you think
Addicted Toys sells the same travel cleaner in three sizes, which makes the range easy to see: 90 ml, 160 ml and 220 ml.
For most people the smallest is enough. The rectum holds far less than the volumes marketed at it, and using more water does not make the result better — it mostly makes cramping more likely and pushes water higher than it needs to go.
The larger sizes are useful if you are preparing for something more involved, or if you would rather refill less often.
Nozzle material
Nozzle shape and firmness matter more than the bulb.
- Silicone is softer and has some give, which is more forgiving on the way in. The all-silicone travel cleaner is silicone throughout.
- Firmer plastic holds its shape and is easier to aim, but leaves less margin for a clumsy angle.
- Pear-shaped bulbs like the Mr Play pear and the Seven Creations pear are wider at the base and easier to grip with wet hands.
Whatever the nozzle, a little water-based lubricant on the tip makes a real difference. This is the single most skipped step.
Water temperature and pressure
Two rules cover most of it.
- Lukewarm, never hot. Water that feels comfortable on the inside of your wrist is about right. The rectum does not warn you the way skin does, so trusting the temperature to feel is not enough.
- Gentle pressure. Squeeze slowly. Fast pressure causes cramping, and cramping is the main reason people give up on douching altogether.
Plain water is what these are designed for. Soap, salt or anything else in the reservoir irritates the lining.
How often
Less than the internet suggests. The rectal lining has a mucus layer that protects it, and frequent or aggressive rinsing strips it. Occasional use before anal play is what these products are for; daily use is not.
If you find you need to douche extensively every time, that is usually a diet and timing question rather than an equipment one.
The automatic option
The Anbiguo Ultimate Cleaner is the outlier here: a motorised unit with several intensity settings, rather than something you squeeze. It removes the variable of your own grip strength, which some people find worth the price. The CalExotics Colt sits between the two in build.
Cleaning the cleaner
Rinse it out immediately after use, inside and out, and let it dry fully before storing — a bulb put away wet stays wet inside. For anything with a detachable nozzle, take it apart.
A toy cleaner is worth having if the same item is used by more than one person. See also the wider intimate cleaning range.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to douche before anal play at all?
Not necessarily. Many people find that timing and diet do most of the work, and that a shower is enough. Douching is about confidence as much as cleanliness.
How long before should I do it?
Allow enough time to expel all the water — typically the better part of an hour, sometimes longer. Rushing this is the most common mistake.
Can I use one of these vaginally?
No. The vagina is self-cleaning and rinsing it disrupts its own balance. These are made for rectal use, and the same device should not be used for both.
What else do I need?
A water-based lubricant for the nozzle, and for the play afterwards. Some people also use anal relaxing gels, though those are a separate question from cleaning. If you are new to the whole area, the butt plugs and the wider anal range are the sensible next pages.
