A plain ring at the base of the penis. It slows blood leaving the tissue, which for many people means a firmer erection that lasts longer. No motor, no charging, nothing to break.

Read this before you buy one

Twenty to thirty minutes maximum. Never while asleep. The ring works by restricting circulation, and restricted circulation has a time limit.

Take it off immediately if there is numbness, colour change, coldness or pain.

Buy stretchy, not rigid, for a first ring. Silicone can be rolled off even at full erection. A rigid metal ring cannot, and if swelling occurs it becomes a genuine medical emergency requiring a hospital to cut it off. Everything sensible on this shelf is silicone or a stretchy blend.

If you take blood thinners, have a bleeding or circulatory disorder, or have any nerve condition affecting the genitals, ask a doctor before using one.

Getting the size right

Too tight is unsafe. Too loose does nothing at all. Since neither is obvious in advance, the sensible approach is to buy a set of sizes rather than a single ring:

Or buy an adjustable one, like the Intense John Triple 4, and find your size before committing.

Put the ring on before full erection, with a little water-based lubricant inside it.

The shapes and what they add

  • Single ring — around the shaft only. Simplest, and where to start. The Armony Calavera.
  • Double ring — one around the shaft, one around the testicles, which holds position better. The Armony Tresor is the cheapest way to try the shape.
  • With a divider — separates the testicles. The Addicted Toys divider ring.
  • Weighted — adds a hanging weight for a different sensation. The CalExotics Admiral.
  • With a ball stretcher — a longer sleeve, as on the Fantasy C-Ringz.

Cleaning

Silicone, non-porous: warm water and unscented soap, dried fully. Solid silicone rings without electronics can be boiled.

Nearby

Vibrating rings add a motor for a little more at the entry level. Rings with a plug combine the ring with internal pressure. Pumps are often used alongside a ring.

How tight should it be?

Snug, never pinching. You should be able to get a fingertip under it, and it should come off without a struggle.

Does it help with erectile dysfunction?

It can help maintain an erection, but it does not treat the cause. Persistent difficulty is worth a doctor's appointment.

Silicone or metal?

Silicone for anything but experienced use. Metal transmits sensation differently and some people prefer it, but it removes your ability to get out of it quickly.

Can I wear one all evening?

No. Twenty to thirty minutes, then off. Take a break before putting it back on.
