An inflatable plug goes in at its resting size and widens once it is in place, usually through a hand bulb on a short hose, so the wearer controls how far it opens. Most of the shelf is silicone, which is what allows the expanding section to stretch and return; ABS turns up on the bulbs, valves and control ends. A third of the pieces have a suction base, so they can be mounted rather than held, and a smaller group takes a motor, with rechargeable and battery versions both present. Many listings state a water rating. Deflated and inflated dimensions are printed on the pages that have them — read the resting diameter first, since that is what has to go in before anything expands. Start small, go slowly, and deflate before withdrawing. Silicone calls for a water-based lubricant, and a generous amount of it.
