Let us be straightforward about the name, because it sells a lot of these and explains none of them. A liquid vibrator is not a vibrator. It is a gel, oil, balm or spray applied to the skin, and the "vibration" is a tingling produced by the ingredients — usually a menthol or plant-extract combination that makes nerve endings more responsive.

Four formats, and the format matters more than the brand

Warming, cooling, or neither

This is the choice most people get wrong, because the packaging rarely leads with it.

Some add heat on top of the tingle — the Clit Pwr balms describe vibration and warmth together. Some add cold: INTT Vibration Ice pairs the tingle with an ice effect and a mint flavour. And some do neither, staying with the tingling alone — the pjur pair sits here.

Cold and heat are not intensity settings. They are different sensations, and people who love one often dislike the other. If you have never tried either, a balm is a cheaper mistake than an oil.

Two things to check before you buy

Base. pjur's gels are water-based and state they are suitable for sex toys. Oil-based products are not — oil degrades latex, which rules out condoms, and it can damage some toy materials. Our compatibility guide sets out what goes with what.

External use. These are surface products. pjur says so on the label, and it holds for the category: applied externally, not internally, and not as a lubricant substitute.

Where this sits among the rest

The orgasm intensifiers overlap with this shelf and aim at the same outcome by other routes; a few products appear on both. The full stimulants range is the level above.

Common questions

Will it work if a vibrator does not?

It is a different mechanism, not a stronger one. A gel raises sensitivity; a vibrator supplies movement. Some people find the combination does what neither achieves alone — the water-based gels are the ones that can be used with a toy.

How long before anything happens?

Most describe a minute or two to build, then a warmth or tingle that fades over the following ten to twenty. The bottles are 6 to 15 ml because a single application is a few drops, not a squeeze.

Is it safe with oral sex?

Several are flavoured specifically for it — INTT Vibration Ice is mint, Clit Me On is red fruit. Flavoured is not the same as intended for it, so check the individual product page.

What if it stings rather than tingles?

Wash it off with warm water and stop. Menthol-based products are strong, and skin varies. Try a small amount on the inner forearm first if you are unsure.
