Kegel balls are a training tool, not a toy that does something to you. They give the pelvic floor something to hold against, so the muscle works while you go about your day.
Why silicone rather than anything else
Silicone is non-porous, which matters more here than in most categories: these are worn internally for extended periods, so a surface that cannot harbour bacteria is the point. It is also softer and warmer than the glass or metal alternatives, which makes a first attempt far less intimidating.
Every one of these needs water-based lubricant. Silicone lubricant bonds to silicone and ruins the surface permanently.
Single, double, or a graduated set
A single ball is the easiest to insert and remove, and the right starting point if you have never used one. The Intense Kisha Fit One and the Moressa Osian One are both single.
Double balls — two linked in a silicone sleeve — are heavier and give more feedback as they shift. The Joyballs Secret and the Moressa Osian Two are the standard versions.
Graduated sets give you several weights to progress through. The Intense Charli kit and the Leslie Kegel Fit set with six weights are the structured way to do this — and progression is the entire mechanism, exactly as with any other muscle.
App-connected trainers
A few models measure the squeeze and report it. The Satisfyer Love Birds Vary vibrates and connects to an app; the Intimichic Pelvis Health II is sold specifically for rehabilitation.
Feedback helps because the pelvic floor is hard to feel isolating. If you find you cannot tell whether you are contracting the right muscle, a device that confirms it is worth the money.
How to use them without overdoing it
- Start with the lightest. Heavier is not a faster result, it just means the muscle disengages and the ball is held by position instead.
- Fifteen to twenty minutes is a session. Wearing them all day is not more training — a muscle held under constant load fatigues rather than strengthens.
- The retrieval cord stays outside. Always.
- Stop if there is pain, and see a doctor rather than pushing on. A pelvic floor can be too tight as easily as too weak, and training a hypertonic floor makes it worse.
Do not use them during pregnancy, with an active infection, or after childbirth or surgery without medical clearance.
Cleaning
Warm water and unscented soap before and after each use, dried fully. Solid silicone without electronics can be boiled. Anything with a motor or an app gets wiped, not submerged, unless the listing says otherwise.
The wider Chinese balls shelf includes the metal and plastic versions, and basic balls covers the simplest models.
How long before I notice anything?
Weeks rather than days, with consistent short sessions. The same timescale as any strength training.
Can I walk around with them in?
Yes, and that is the usual way — but keep it to the session length rather than all day.
Which weight do I start with?
The lightest one you can hold without conscious effort. If it falls out, you need lighter, not heavier.
Are these the same as ben wa balls?
The same idea. Traditional ben wa balls are small and unlinked; these are larger, linked, and have a retrieval cord, which makes them considerably easier to use.
