Cosmetic gels and creams applied to the vaginal entrance or the vulva, usually a short while before sex. Most are built on astringent plant extracts such as witch hazel, a few on caffeine or tannin, and what they give is a passing feeling of warmth and closeness on the skin, not a change to the body. Bottles and tubes are small, because very little is used each time. Several formulas state they are free of silicone, parabens or mineral oils. Read the ingredient list rather than the packaging: an alum-based formula behaves differently from a botanical one. Apply well before contact, wait as long as the label says, and stop if it stings. If dryness is the real issue, a plain water-based lubricant is the more useful product.
