A hybrid is a water-based lubricant with silicone blended in. The intention is to get the longevity of silicone without the cleanup, and for most people it works — this is the shelf to look at if water-based lube keeps drying out on you.

What the blend actually changes

Skins describes its Fusion as combining "the freshness, appearance and natural feel of a water-based lubricant with the silky smoothness and incredible longevity typical of silicone", and that is a fair summary of the whole category.

In practice:

  • It lasts longer than water-based without reapplying, because the silicone fraction does not evaporate.
  • It washes off more easily than pure silicone, because the water fraction carries most of it.
  • It feels silkier and less sticky as it dries down.

The Stimul8 S8 Hybrid is paraben-free, phthalate-free and free of added colours — worth noting if you react to preservatives in ordinary water-based lube.

The silicone-toy question, answered honestly

Pure silicone lubricant bonds to silicone toys and permanently damages the surface. A hybrid contains silicone, so the question is fair, and manufacturers generally state hybrids are toy-safe.

Our advice is to be slightly more cautious than the label: patch-test on the base of the toy, wait a few minutes, and check that the surface has not gone tacky. If it has, use a plain water-based lubricant with that toy instead. On an expensive silicone vibrator, a two-minute test is cheap insurance.

With condoms there is no ambiguity — both water and silicone are latex-safe, so hybrids are fine.

Thickness matters as much as the base

Several products here come in a thick or "extra thick" version, and that is a different product rather than a marketing tier. Thicker gel cushions more, stays where it is put, and is what most people want for anal use — which is why the Eros Power Anal, the Skins Anal Hybrid and the Lubrax Hybrid Anal all use a thicker formula.

Thinner hybrids like the Skins Fusion feel more natural for vaginal use and for massage.

Sizes

50 ml is a try-it size. 100–130 ml is the practical bottle. 200 ml, like the S8 Extreme Thick, is the one to buy when you already know it suits you.

The other bases

Water-based is the universal default and the only fully safe option with every toy material. Silicone-based lasts longest and works in water, but not with silicone toys. The whole lubricants shelf covers the rest.

Will a hybrid stain sheets?

Less than an oil, more than plain water-based. Silicone can leave marks on fabric; wash promptly.

Can I use it in the shower?

Better than water-based, which rinses away immediately, but not as well as pure silicone.

Is it safe for anal use?

Yes, and the thicker hybrids are among the better choices for it. The rectum produces no lubrication of its own, so a formula that lasts is genuinely useful.

Does it need refrigerating or shaking?

No. Store at room temperature, out of sunlight, cap closed.
